The papers in this Special Issue highlight some the most cutting edge research in the field of intellectual capital from Taiwan.

In the last several years, the island has prospered and become one of Asia’s economic "Tigers". Taiwan has harvested its intellectual capital and carved out leading global positions in various high-tech industries. With a population of 23 million inhabitants and a growing GDP per capita of $23,400, the Taiwanese continue to make inroads in the global economic battle for knowledge-based supremacy.

All of the selected papers in this Special Issue have been authored by Taiwanese researchers with a closing article from two quasi-government representatives. As a collection, this issue sets the groundwork for many years of future hypothesis development and testing in Taiwan. The authors in this special issue examine intellectual capital from a variety of functional perspectives including strategic management, human resource management, accounting and information technology drawing on much of the extant literature with a Taiwanese flavour.

Contents:

An empirical investigation of the relationship between intellectual capital and firms’ market value and financial performance
Using data drawn from Taiwanese listed companies, the authors construct regression models to examine the relationship between corporate value creation efficiency and firms’ market-to-book value ratios, and explore the relation between intellectual capital and firms’ current as well as future financial performance.

Top management teams’ social capital in Taiwan: The impact on firm value in an emerging economy
The prominence and prestige measures of a TMT's extra-business group network can be used by managers, external analysts and investors to assess to what extent firms are capable of leveraging relationships with other firms, and thereby better predict future firm performance and value.

The role of social capital in the relationship between human capital and career mobility: Moderator or mediator?
This study aims to examine what kind of role social capital plays in the relationship between human capital and career outcomes, with a particular focus on testing the mediation and moderation models.

An evaluation of the Balanced Scorecard in equity valuation: The case of exchange ratio in the M&As of Taiwan's financial industry
The investigations here are based on the empirical relationships between a set of BSC indicators and the exchange ratios for a sample of 32 mergers and acquisitions (M&As) of 14 financial holding companies. Data sources are collected from machine-readable database, annual financial reports, industry reports and professional magazines. The study period covers years 2000-2002.

Intellectual capital and performance in causal models: Evidence from the information technology industry in Taiwan
This paper seeks to investigate the impact of intellectual capital elements on business performance, as well as the relationship among intellectual capital elements from a cause-effect perspective. The study helps management identify relevant intellectual capital elements and their indicators to enhance business performance.

Exploration for the relationship between innovation, IT and performance
This study aims to ask two important research questions: “Do the investments of innovation capital and information technology (IT) capital have a non-linear relationship with firm performance?” and “Does the interaction between innovation capital and IT capital have synergy effects on firm performance?”

Building customer capital through relationship marketing activities: The case of Taiwanese multilevel marketing companies
Four types of relationship marketing activities – core service performances, recognition for contributions, dissemination of organization knowledge, and member interdependence enhancement – have significant influences on relationship equity. Relationship equity in turn affects customer capital.

The integration between Balanced Scorecard and intellectual capital
This paper aims to discuss how to integrate the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) with intellectual capital (IC); and handle the issues of creation, formation, measurement, reporting and even management of strategic intellectual capital (SIC).

Intellectual capital system interaction in Taiwan
Confronted with the transformation of industrial economies, the Taiwanese information technology (IT) industry has to upgrade from production to innovation orientation. The paper seeks to explore what is the core competence of the Taiwanese IT industry.
