Computational intelligence is a well-established paradigm, where new theories with sound applications are continuously evolving. This publication features nine cutting-edge studies presented by leaders in the field at the International Workshop on Advanced Computational Intelligence (IWACI 2008).

The workshop was held at the University of Macau on June 7-8, 2008 as a post-conference workshop of World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI 2008), which was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong, June 1-6, 2008. All submissions were peer-reviewed by at least two experts in the related field before the workshop. The Program Committee then further invited authors to revise their papers according to feedback at and after the workshop. This all ensures that the chapters herein are innovative contributions of the highest quality to the research area.

Contents list:

‘Recent advances in cluster analysis’
by Rui Xu and Donald C. Wunsch II
A review of the issues related to cluster analysis, one of the most important and primitive activities of human beings, and of the advances made in recent years.

‘A performance gradient perspective on gradient-based policy iteration and a modified value iteration’
by Lei Yang, James Denkert, Jennie Si
A mathematical framework is developed to address some algorithmic features of approximate dynamic programming (ADP) by using an average cost formulation based on the concepts of differential costs and performance gradients.

‘An estimating method for IP traffic matrix based on generalized inverse matrix’
by Fengjun Shang
A presentation of research in the area of the applications of the generalized inverse matrix in IP traffic matrix. This paper illustrates the useful information that can be obtained using generalized inverse matrix for incomplete data estimation.

‘Image piecewise inpainting based on radial basis function’
by Minfen Shen, Jialiang Chen and Bin Li
A novel algorithm for image inpainting, which has been widely used for removing unwanted objects from images or reconstructing damaged photographs.

‘Embedding a social fabric component into cultural algorithms toolkit for an enhanced knowledge-driven engineering optimization’
by Robert Reynolds and Mostafa Ali
An introduction to the notion of a social fabric (SF) in which the expression of knowledge sources (KS) in cultural algorithms (CA) can be distributed through the population.

‘Automative engine idle speed control optimization using lease squares support vector machine and genetic algorithm’
by P.K. Wong, L.M. Tam, K Li, and H.C. Wong
A proposal of a novel ECU setup optimization approach for engine idle speed control

‘A neural network approach to control performance assessment’
by Yunfeng Zhou and Feng Wan
Presenting a neural network approach to control performance assessment.

‘Minimizing joint-torques of the flexible redundant manipulator on the premise of vibration supression’
by Zhihui Gao, Chao Yun, and Yushu Bian
An examination of a new idea of vibration control which minimizes joint-torques and suppresses vibration of the flexible redundant manipulator.

About International Journal of Intelligent Computing and Cybernetics

International Journal of Intelligent Computing and Cybernetics focuses on studying and understanding the underlying principles of natural computation, and how these principles can be adopted or modified to extend and enrich computer science and engineering. Cybernetics is the science of communication and control in society and in individual human beings. Algorithms, techniques and theories in these fields have been successfully applied to a wide range of complex problems. IJICC is an international forum for publication of original papers in all disciplines of intelligent computing and cybernetics.
