Originally published as the International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management Volume 33 Number 1, 2005

ISBN: 1 84544 088 9

Guest edited by: Professor John Fernie.

This Special Issue features five papers dealing with international retailing.

Themes include: international retail divestment (an examination of developments in this area in the period 1987-2003); Tesco's internationalisation and the "shocks" the company experienced in the marketplace leading to their adoption of a more vigilant approach to entering new markets; Auchan's entry into Russia; the relationship between psychic distance and offer adaption (findings from a survey indicate factors such as national culture and economic differences do not affect the degree to which retailers standardise or adapt - whilst factors such as market structure and business differences are strong predictors); finally, Cuban retailing (a look at developments in the wake of the collapse of the soviet Union)

Contents:

International retail divestment activity
The research presented here initiates the process of the detailed analysis of international retail divestment activity through the identification of the volume of global divestment activity and the characteristics of that activity during the timeframe of 1987-2003.

Retail multinational learning: a case study of Tesco
This research draws on a dataset of 62 in-depth interviews with key executives, sell- and buy-side analysts and corporate advisers at the leading investment banks in the City of London to detail the experiences of Tesco's European expansion.

Auchan's entry into Russia: prospects and research implications
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the Russian retail landscape and emerging patterns of consumption, especially in the capital Moscow.

Explaining retail offer adaptation through psychic distance
The purpose of this study is to examine empirically the relationship between psychic distance and adaptation of the retail offer across a range of countries. Data were collected using a mail survey of randomly selected non-food retailers that operated stores in at least three foreign countries.

Cuban retailing: from a centrally planned to a mixed dual system
The purpose of this paper is to provide a current overview of Cuban wholesaling distribution and retailing for consumer products. It examines the challenges that are taking place in the wholesale and retail distribution system in the country and describes the sharp contrast between the state of retailing in Cuba before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
